IDF 7th Armoured Brigade, Valley of Tears, Yom Kippur 1973

Last week, my Canon EOS 650D gave up on me and gave me a good reason to trade it in with the local Canon dealership to get a discount on the new Canon EOS R8 camera.

I took some test shots with the EOS R8 on one of my personal favorite projects and I am no doubt very impressed with the colours and the  degree of sharpness of the image.

Verlinden Productions - US Infantryman, Vietnam 1967

This is an old Roger Saunders sculpt from the 1980s which was part of Verlinden Productions initial range of 54mm metal figures.

I did a "face off" with a Hornet head taken from HH38 War faces and raised the shoulders to depict a commander in a raging fit.

The process is quite straightforward; simply remove the faces of the donor and recipient heads and attach them together. I find this approach less intrusive, as it does not involve modifying the collar area or rebuilding the entire neck.

The figure is primed with Tamiya enamel smoke X-19 and painted with AK Gen 3 acrylics.

Spearhead, US 3rd Armoured Division, Paderborn, Germany 1945

The Battle of Paderborn was hard fought by the US 3rd Armoured Division towards the closing stages of the war in Europe. I wanted to summarise the bitter mood from the aftermath of the fighting by contrasting the tank crew's weary "thousand-yard stare" and his nervous grasp on his cigarette against his foot on the severed gun barrel of his adversary - a symbol of a costly victory.

The figure was painted with a mixture of Vallejo and AK Interactive Gen 3 paints. Colour for Vallejo Acrylics mixes can be found HERE from an earlier project. I used a combination of cool dark grey and warm dark brown tones for the shadows areas to render a sombre mood. Warms tones are employed to direct the viewer's gaze towards the face and hand - the two most expressive features of a human portrait. And with that,  we have come to the conclusion of this project. Let's see what is still left on the bench...
